As some of you may know, there has been massive flooding and many, many thunderstorms in the Southeast as of late. On Sunday, there was a particularly rough bit of weather in my mother's neighborhood in Middle Tennessee. A monstrous clap of thunder heralded a vicious streak of lightning that zapped her almost-new (purchased in May) cordless phone. The next day, she contacted the local phone company; the technician spent over 3 hours repairing wiring that had suffered the brunt of the assault. Mama was still without her favorite phone, though, and the other ones she has are, to put it plainly, pieces of crap.

I just found all this out this morning (so that explains why I couldn't reach her yesterday)! Knowing she had bought the phone at one of the three Radio Shacks available to her, I ascertained which one and, since it would have been long distance for her to call them, I set up a 3-way and let her talk to one of the CSR's. Much to her amazement (and mine, quite frankly), he said that, although it normally wouldn't be covered by a lightning strike, he would replace the phone for her, free of charge! This is a $75 phone, folks. That may not sound like much to most of you, but for someone on a fixed income, it's a fortune. She thanked him profusely and, after cautioning her not to run out today to fetch the new phone (weather is still sucktastic down there), I went on about my day, happy that I'd actually done something useful.

The purpose of this post wasn't to brag (well, ok, maybe a little), but to point out that:

THEM THAT DON'T ASK, DON'T GIT!

Never assume you can't have what you want just because Vulcan logic says you can't.

I already know these words will come back to bite me, so I'm investing in Kevlar undies asap! lol

*****************************************************************************************************************************************

I had to call Mama back this afternoon for another reason, and found
out that she'd already gone and got that phone! I had a cow, but she
assured me that the weather had finally broken off and the sun was
out. She'll be a happy yapper tomorrow after the phone is all charged
up, I'm sure.

Tonight, the man of the house and I were at our respective desks, each doing our own thing, when I heard something that sounded like Simon had found a piano and was trying to learn how to play it. I knew immediately what the noise really was: my previous blog post had been discovered! I cringed, rather embarrassed that my little secret had been found out. Next thing I know, here he comes with an electronic keyboard he'd bought many years ago, that had been stashed in the closet. I vaguely remember him mentioning he had one, but really didn't think too much about it until I saw him with it tonight. He even found the A/C adapter, which was not with the keyboard.

He set me up in the kitchen temporarily, just to see if it would still play. He showed me several things that it would do, and then left me to it. I hit it a few licks, but it's been so long since I played that I'm really self-conscious about making noise with humans around (animals don't count).. I told him I'd fool around with it when I'm alone. Now all these little ditties I hear in my head can actually come to life! I can't really write music, well, not the way it's supposed to be, but maybe good enough for me to keep a record of what I've done. This keyboard has a record function on it, but I want something on paper that I know won't disappear.

Now if I just had a manual for it...it's the most complicated keyboard I've ever used, having grown up on pianos and an antique pump organ. No matter, I'll figure out what I need to.

Next time, I'm wishing for something BIG, like, say...a PT Cruiser? *hint hint*

This is something I found when looking through iGoogle apps. I've missed my piano since I've been out here in California, even though my musical skill leave much to be desired.

This is far from perfect. The obvious drawback is having to use keyboard keys (or the mouse) to strike the notes. This is very awkward for anyone who knows where the finger positions are! Also, it isn't tuned correctly; it's a whole step off. But, I'm just glad to have something to make music with, even as difficult as it may be.

I found a site where you can print FREE staff paper, and have tried to notate as least one song using this weird keyboard method. Slow going, but I'm only doing this for myself, when I'm alone, so time doesn't matter.

It really is better than nothing, and sounds better than the "midi" sound that you'd expect from a cheap keyboard.
